Speri Valpolicella Classico Superiore Vigneto Sant'Urbano 2004

### Description

This bottle comes from Speri, an iconic, family-run estate that has been a benchmark producer in the Valpolicella region for generations. The Speri family is highly regarded for its commitment to organic farming and traditional winemaking techniques that honor the unique terroir of the Veneto hills.

The wine comes entirely from the prestigious Sant'Urbano vineyard, located on a prominent hill in the municipality of Fumane. Situated at an ideal elevation with limestone-rich volcanic soils, this single vineyard is famous for producing grapes of exceptional concentration and complexity. Rather than a standard Valpolicella, this Classico Superiore is crafted using a specialized technique where carefully selected grapes are left to dry, or undergo appassimento, for a brief period of roughly three to four weeks before vinification. This process brings an unmistakable richness and depth to the final blend, which is typically composed of native varieties including Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara, followed by extended maturation in oak casks.

  • Type: Medium-to-full-bodied Red Wine
  • Grape Varieties: Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara
  • Classification: Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata)
  • Alcohol Content: 13.5% vol
  • Volume: 750 mL
  • Tasting Notes & Current Profile: The 2004 vintage in Veneto is highly regarded as a balanced, classic year, favored by cool autumn temperatures that allowed for long, even ripening and fantastic structural acidity. Having matured for over two decades, this wine is deep within its tertiary phase of enjoyment. It displays a dark ruby-garnet color with a softer mahogany hue toward the rim. On the nose, it offers a beautifully integrated bouquet of dried dark cherries, stewed plums, sweet tobacco leaf, leather, and a delicate touch of bittersweet chocolate, alongside the signature herbal spice notes of old Valpolicella. The palate reveals completely softened, velvety tannins and a smooth texture. A bright core of regional acidity keeps the dried-fruit flavors remarkably vibrant, leading into a long, savory, and slightly mineral finish.

Given its considerable age, the wine will likely contain a fine layer of natural sediment. It is highly recommended to leave the bottle standing in an upright position for 24 hours prior to opening, and to pour it directly into a large glass, allowing it to gently breathe and unfurl its aromatic bouquet over the course of an evening.
