The iconic Pioneer SX-838 was released in 1974, features a combination of excellent sound quality, power, and classic design. Its retail price was $499.95. It delivers 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms with 0.3% total harmonic distortion. Today the x3x line from Pioneer is highly desired for both its performance and its looks.
The SX-838 is well equipped with inputs, including two Phono inputs, and also with outputs - there is an option of connecting three sets of speakers. On top there is a variety of settings as can be seen from the pictures.
Overall, the Pioneer SX-838 is an excellent receiver. It has the cool early Pioneer styling, underrated power, and plenty of features.
What was done for this particular unit: Recapped all major boards (excluding the FM/AM); Replaced the small transistors, known to go bad with time; New real wood veneer on the wood case; Cleaned all pots and switches; LED lamps upgrade; All settings done as per the service manual; New feet; Thoroughly cleaned inside and out; etc.
As a result the Pioneer SX-838 looks really nice and sounds even better.
