This very special Glendalough 13 Year Old single malt is the first ever Irish release to be finished in Mizunara Japanese oak puncheons after first being matured in first-fill bourbon barrels. It comes to you with hints of spice, citrus and apricots with a touch of vanilla, pine, and creaminess from the oak. Classic sandalwood, lychee and coconut from the Mizunara is a pleasant surprise considering this is just a finish. Mizunara Oak, or Quercus Crispula, are notoriously difficult to work. The tree doesn’t grow as straight as it’s American or European cousins and is also prone to leakage. The trees also need to be very old to harvest for barrels meaning the cost is even higher. We think the trouble it worth it! Very limited batch and one of the earliest Irish whiskeys to be finished as such.
