The Wednesday Wars is a wonderfully witty and compelling story about a teenage boy’s mishaps and adventures over the course of the 1967–68 school year in Long Island, New York.
Holling Hoodhood is a seventh‑grader stuck spending Wednesday afternoons with Mrs. Baker—who, he’s convinced, cannot stand him. While everyone else heads to religious class, Holling is left reading Shakespeare, dodging classroom disasters, and trying to survive junior high during the Vietnam era.
Meanwhile, his dad demands perfection, a bully demands cream puffs, two escaped rats demand blood, and Holling somehow ends up in a holiday play wearing bright yellow tights. Through all the chaos, he discovers courage, confidence, and his own version of Motivation.
This book was recommended to me and at first I wasn't too sure. But then I fell in love with Holling - and then Mrs Baker and I couldn't put it down.
Very well read and dog eared, some numbers on the side but soo well worth the read!
