Children is The Mission at their most grand, dramatic, and widescreen. After the success of Gods Own Medicine, Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams pushed their gothic rock sound into something bigger, brighter, and more ambitious, helped by the unmistakable production of John Paul Jones (yes, that John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin). His touch gives the album a deeper, more cinematic feel: richer arrangements, fuller bass, and a sense of scale that sets it apart from their debut.
This is the record where The Mission fully embraced their epic, mystical identity. Tracks like “Tower of Strength,” “Kingdom Come,” “Beyond the Pale,” and “Dream On” became anthems of the late‑80s goth scene. It’s darker than mainstream rock, but more melodic and romantic than most post‑punk of the era.
Children is a cornerstone of gothic rock’s evolution: confident, atmospheric, and full of that unmistakable Mission blend of spiritual imagery, emotional intensity, and big, sweeping choruses.
