In 1998, a Royal Brackla bottling was released as part of the Rare Malts Collection. This bottle was distilled in 1978 and bottled 20 years later at a cask strength of 59.8% ABV.
The Brackla distillery was built on the estate of the Cawdor Castle, near Nairn, in 1812. Brackla was the first whisky distillery to be granted a Royal Warrant, given to companies supplying goods to the royal household, awarded in 1833.
The Royal Warrant, bestowed by King William IV, added the 'royal' prefix to the distillery, creating the Royal Brackla name. Despite a turbulent history, with multiple closures and transfers of ownership, the Royal Brackla distillery has been producing whisky for over 200 years.
The Rare Malts Selection series was released by Diageo from 1995 until 2005. Similar to the Flora & Fauna series, the Rare Malts were designed to showcase some of the lesser known distilleries under Diageo and to create limited, cask strength bottlings.
