The Audiolab 9000P is a very good power amplifier, and it makes considerably more sense when viewed as the partner to the 9000Q rather than simply as a 100 W/ch power amp. It is a Class AB, dual-mono-style design with Audiolab's CFB (Complementary Feedback) topology, a 320 VA toroidal transformer and 60,000 µF of reservoir capacitance. Officially it delivers 100 W/8Ω and 160 W/4Ω per channel, with balanced XLR and RCA inputs.
The character is:
- Clean and highly controlled
- Fast and precise
- Strong bass grip
- Excellent stereo separation
- Very good transparency
- More neutral/analytical than warm
- Plenty of dynamic headroom for its nominal 100 W rating
- In mono mode, Audiolab rates each 9000P at 300 W/8Ω and 380 W/4Ω. Hi-Fi News actually measured around 370 W/8Ω and 520 W/4Ω dynamically in bridged operation.
The 9000Q/9000P combination has been described as having a deep, precise soundstage with secure image placement, but also as not being aimed at listeners who prefer a warm and cosy sound. The interesting part: it measures better than the rating suggests Hi-Fi News measured the 9000P at approximately 113 W/ch into 8Ω and 188 W/ch into 4Ω, with substantial short-term dynamic power available into lower impedances. That's a very healthy result for an amplifier rated at 100 W/ch.
