IN 1956, THANKS TO ITS EXPERIENCE IN THE PRODUCTION OF PRECISION INSTRUMENTS, Officine Panerai filed the patent for the crown protection bridge, which would become the distinctive mark of the Luminor model: a reliable, resistant watch that is easy to read, especially underwater. The distinctive features of Officine Panerai's Luminor Base, which remains today a unique, highly original watch, include: the large, minimal dial, easy to read even in the dark or underwater; the lever crown protection device (trademark protected) which shields the winding crown making it water-resistant; and a highly reliable movement, developed by Panerai in accordance with the dictates of Swiss watchmaking tradition. The case of this Luminor Base is made from a single block of AISI 316L stainless steel. The finished product is obtained after more than 60 complex working stages, starting from the initial stamping process. A number of quality control operations carried out using sophisticated instruments guarantee an exceptionally resistant and precise result. The anti-reflective crystal is made of sapphire obtained from corundum, the hardest material after diamonds, which has no impurities, is completely transparent and virtually unscratchable. It is slightly convex to guarantee perfect visibility of the dial and resistance at great depths. The case back of the Luminor Base is also made of sapphire. The hand-wound, mechanical movement of this watch is an OP X, with a 56-hour power reserve, 17 jewels, Glucydur® monometallic balance, 21,600 alternations/hour, Incabloc® anti-shock device, Côtes de Genève decoration on the bridges and blued steel screws.
