This book ranges further than the word 'gunfighter' usually suggests. It is not only used in the Wild West sense - to apply to bad men, lawmen and others whose guns were part of their daily life - here the word also embraces duelists, Indians and Indian fighters and also the criminals and lawmen of our own century. However, the modern gunfighters in this book were not part of organized crime, but were some of those who shot and robbed their way to ill- fame in the Midwest or West, either on their own or in small gangs. Some of them were not so very different from the gunfighters of the Old West. Indeed, Henry Starr was an actual link with it, for he started as a bad man on a horse and finished his career in cars. Frank Hamer, that great Texas Ranger, who finally endet the gory careers of Bonnie and Clyde, was another who began his career in the Old West and endet it in a very different era. Or was it so very different? The reader must decide.
