For sale: Ca' del Baio, Barbaresco "Asili" 2014, DOCG, Piedmont, Italy.
I am offering a bottle of the 2014 Ca' del Baio Barbaresco from the prestigious Asili cru. Managed by the Grasso family, this estate is one of the primary owners of this legendary hillside in the commune of Barbaresco. While 2014 was a challenging "winemaker's vintage" in much of Piedmont, Barbaresco generally outperformed Barolo due to a more favorable microclimate. In the hands of a meticulous producer like Ca' del Baio, the 2014 Asili resulted in a wine of great aromatic precision, emphasizing elegance and "terroir" transparency over raw power.
Vintage and Maturity
The 2014 vintage produced Nebbiolos with vibrant acidity and refined tannins. In 2026, the 2014 Asili has reached a beautiful state of maturity. It presents a bright garnet red color with characteristic orange reflections. The nose is intense and evolved, featuring aromas of marasca cherries and violets, layered with complex secondary notes of black pepper, licorice, tobacco, and "goudron" (tar). On the palate, it is dry, warm, and remarkably velvety, showing the "feminine" elegance and silky texture for which the Asili vineyard is famous.
Maturity Status: In 2026, the 2014 is in its prime drinking window. The 10-12 years since harvest have allowed the initially "dusty" tannins to soften completely, resulting in a wine that is exceptionally smooth and harmonious. While it will continue to drink well for another 3 to 5 years, it is currently at its peak for those who enjoy the balance of fading red fruit and complex earthy aromatics.
Market Price and Value
Ca' del Baio is widely recognized for offering some of the best quality-to-price ratios in the Barbaresco region, especially from a "Grand Cru" site like Asili.
In the Swiss market (Zurich/Schwyz/Geneva), the 2014 Asili typically trades between 55 CHF and 85 CHF. Current specialist retail listings for authenticated, well-stored bottles range from 58 CHF to 90 CHF. It is a sophisticated choice for collectors looking for a mature, site-specific Barbaresco without the premium pricing of the region's largest names.
Handling: This is a refined and aromatic Nebbiolo. I recommend opening the bottle 60 minutes before serving to allow the delicate violet and spice notes to unfurl. Serve at 18C in a large Burgundy glass to fully appreciate its "Asili" elegance.
