A very interesting Alberta spruce tree, with a twisted trunk (a very rare shape for this species). The tree is on its way to become an informal upright bonsai. The Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca 'Conica') is a popular and widely used bonsai subject, extremely cold-hardy, and very workable with the right approach.

Light: Place your dwarf Alberta spruce bonsai in full sun during the growing season. Most bonsai benefit from around six hours of direct light daily. In winter, move it to semi-shade.

Watering: Even during dormancy the tree still requires watering. Check by sticking your finger an inch into the soil; if it is soggy, hold off until it dries slightly. Overwatering is a common beginner mistake in winter, as the tree has a lower water demand but the habit of regular watering persists. During the growing season, keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Use a neutral to slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soil mix. Simply wetting the whole tree, foliage included, each time you water is one of the best ways to keep spider mites in check.

Temperature: The dwarf Alberta spruce must be kept outdoors year-round and must experience a cold dormancy period in winter. Protect it from particularly harsh frosts, strong winds, and desiccating conditions. The species can tolerate temperatures down to around −23°C, but because it is in a shallow bonsai pot rather than the ground, the roots are far more exposed. Provide protection once temperatures consistently drop below freezing. In late autumn, protect the pot by burying it in the ground or mulching heavily over it. The tree should be shielded from strong wind and direct sun throughout winter, but snow and rain are fine.

Fertilizing: Feed with a well-balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks from spring through fall. Alternatively, a slow-release pellet-based fertilizer works well and can be applied sparingly every one to two months during the growing season. Avoid high-nitrogen formulations in late summer, as you want the new growth to harden before winter rather than push soft flushes too late in the season. Do not fertilize during dormancy.

Pruning: During the growing season, wait for new shoots to reach about 2–3 cm, then pinch them back to roughly two-thirds of their length. Pinching the tips of the new "candles" by one-third to one-half encourages a denser habit. Critically, avoid cutting back into old woody growth that lacks green needles. Spruce does not reliably back-bud from bare wood. Prune larger branches in autumn when wounds bleed less. For wiring, wait until late summer once all fresh growth has fully hardened off. Avoid moving branches in spring or summer during active growth. Branches that are pushed around too much in May tend to die by late summer. Expect wire to need to stay on for a long time, as branches are slow to set.

Repotting: Repot every two years in early spring before new growth begins, or in autumn. Use a standard bonsai soil mix; the tree prefers neutral to slightly acidic, moist, well-drained substrate.

Troubleshooting: The main threats are aphids, spider mites, rust, and adelgids
