Conceptual artist, painter, sculptor, architect, self-promoter, dissident, thorn in the side of the regime in Beijing - Ai Weiwei is almost as well known for his political positions and his presence on social media as for his art, which often takes on spectacular dimensions.
This monograph, based on the Collector's Edition published by TASCHEN, examines all phases of Ai Weiwei's career up to his release from Chinese state prison. It contains detailed images that make it possible to trace his development from his early days in New York to the recent past. In addition to his artistic career, which is full of highlights (participation in documenta 12, the famous installation Sunflower Seeds with 100 million porcelain sunflower seeds for the Tate Modern and much more), his political commitment is also examined in detail. The rich visual material is complemented by numerous statements taken from exclusive interviews with Ai Weiwei and offers intimate insights into the artist's working method.
The book contains texts by Uli Sigg, Ai Weiwei's long-time friend and former Swiss ambassador to the People's Republic of China, as well as by Roger M. Buergel, who curated documenta 12 in 2007 and made Ai's work Fairytale possible there.
