The name Steely Dan comes from a steam‑powered dildo mentioned in William S. Burroughs’ 1959 novel Naked Lunch.
Countdown to Ecstasy is their second album and it is a tighter, more band‑driven record that leans heavily into jazz‑rock complexity. Unlike their debut, this album was recorded with the touring lineup, giving it a more organic, live feel while still maintaining Becker & Fagen’s trademark studio precision.
The record includes classics like “Bodhisattva,” “Razor Boy,” “Show Biz Kids,” and “My Old School.” It’s Steely Dan at their early peak — sardonic lyrics, immaculate musicianship, and a blend of rock and jazz that no one else could match.
