Spaulding & Co. Paris–Chicago – Silver, Gold & Enamel Travel Clock, c.1910–1915 | Diamond & Sapphire Details | Fully Serviced
A museum-quality Spaulding & Co. travel clock, crafted circa 1910–1915, from the golden age when Parisian jewelry design met American ambition. This piece perfectly embodies the transatlantic elegance that defined Spaulding & Co., the famed Chicago jeweler — and official agent of Tiffany & Co. in Europe — who partnered with the finest Parisian ateliers of the early 20th century.
Technical and artistic details:
- Case: solid silver, with hallmarks
- Gold elements: solid 18-carat yellow gold, likewise hallmarked with the French eagle’s head
- Bezel: solid 18-carat gold, richly enameled in deep royal blue and white dots
- Hands: in platinum, each set with old-cut diamonds
- Cabochons: natural blue cabochon sapphires at the four cardinal positions
- Dial: engine-turned guilloché, probably vermeil, on matte frosted crystal, to delicately diffuse light
- Movement: mechanical, fully serviced by a professional watchmaker, running accurately for its age
- Box: original Spaulding & Co. Paris leather travel case with silk and velvet interior, beautifully preserved
This clock represents the pinnacle of Belle Époque craftsmanship, uniting French artistry with American luxury. Likely created between Chicago and Paris, for Spaulding’s Place Vendôme branch, it reflects the same Parisian refinement found in the work of Cartier, Boucheron, and Tiffany & Co.
