Bram van Velde was a Dutch painter known for his emotionally charged abstract works and his unique contribution to 20th-century European art. Though often associated with the École de Paris and linked to abstract expressionism and lyrical abstraction, van Velde's work defied easy categorization. He developed a deeply personal visual language marked by expressive forms, muted yet powerful color palettes, and a sense of existential tension.

Having spent much of his life in France, van Velde struggled with recognition for many years, living in near poverty, but was supported by influential literary and artistic figures such as Samuel Beckett. Over time, his work gained appreciation for its intensity and depth, earning him a place among the important modern painters of the post-war era.
