A striking Thuja (Arborvitae) bonsai trained in the formal upright style (chokkan), evoking the soaring silhouette of a giant Sequoia. The straight, tapered trunk rises confidently from a wide, shallow terracotta pot, with branches arranged in tiers that progressively diminish toward the apex — a structure that captures the grandeur of a forest giant in miniature form. Foliage pads display the characteristic flat, fan-like sprays of Thuja, bright green and healthy. An excellent choice for beginners and experienced enthusiasts alike.

Light

Full sun to partial shade outdoors. Needs at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Avoid permanent indoor placement — Thuja is an outdoor species.

Temperature

Hardy and frost-tolerant (down to −15 °C).

Watering

Water regularly and thoroughly, letting the top layer dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging. In summer, daily watering may be needed. Reduce frequency in winter.

Fertilizer

Feed every 2–3 weeks from early spring to late summer with a balanced bonsai fertilizer. Switch to a low-nitrogen formula in autumn to harden the wood before winter.

Pruning

Pinch back new growth throughout the growing season to maintain the silhouette. Structural pruning is best done in early spring before bud break. Remove any deadwood or crossing branches.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years in early spring, just as buds begin to swell. Use well-draining bonsai soil. Trim up to one-third of the roots at each repotting.

Troubleshooting

  • Browning foliage: Usually caused by drought, root rot, or winter wind burn. Check watering habits and consider windbreak protection in cold months.
  • Leggy growth with pale foliage: Insufficient light. Move the tree to a sunnier outdoor position.
  • Spider mites: Common in hot, dry conditions. Spray the foliage with water regularly and treat with an appropriate miticide if infestation is confirmed.
  • Weak branch structure: Wire branches in autumn or winter when the foliage is less dense. Remove wire before it bites into the bark.
