Designed exclusively for Canon EOS cameras back in the late '80 (1987, to be exact), it was also once used to be Canon top flash model for the EOS cameras. This dedicated automatic flash features an auto internal zoom mechanism that matches the flash coverage of the lens in use from 24mm to 80mm. The 420EZ has automatic A-TTL operation - the EOS camera measures the ambient light and fires a near-infrared preflash to determine flash-to-subject distance and set the aperture. Then, during exposure, SPC photocells measure the light reflected on the film plane and control the flash output for perfect flash exposure balanced with the background light. The 420EZ also features a Rapid Fire Flash System with a recycling time of 1.5 sec.
