For sale: Giordano Vini, "Massaro" Primitivo Puglia IGT, Italy – 4 Bottles Vertical Collection (Vintages 2017, 2018 x 2 and 2022).

I am offering a unique 4 bottles vertical lot of the popular "Massaro" Primitivo from Giordano Vini, featuring the 2017, 2018, and 2022 vintages. Sourced from the sun-drenched vineyards of Puglia in southern Italy, the Massaro bottling is loved for its rich, bold, and jammy Mediterranean profile. This vertical selection offers a fantastic opportunity to taste and compare how this powerhouse Italian red evolves over time, contrast a pair of beautifully matured expressions against a vibrant, younger release.

Vintage and Maturity

Primitivo thrives in the warm, dry climate of Puglia, yielding grapes with high sugar concentration that translates into rich, full-bodied wines with soft acidity and plush textures.

• 2017 Vintage: In 2026, at nine years of age, this bottle represents a fully mature, tertiary Primitivo. The scorching hot 2017 growing season yielded ultra-ripe fruit, which has now settled into a smooth, savory, and complex state.

• 2018 Vintage: At eight years old, this bottle is in a gorgeous sweet spot of maturity. The 2018 season was slightly more balanced, allowing this wine to retain a fine line of freshness alongside its developing leather and spice notes.

• 2022 Vintage: At four years of age, this wine represents the youthful, fruit-forward energy of the estate. It showcases the intense, primary fruit concentration of a classic warm southern Italian vintage.

Critical Standing:

• Luca Maroni (I Migliori Vini Italiani): Frequently awards Giordano’s flagship Primitivo releases high scores between 94-98 points, routinely praising them for their "absolute fruit consistency," "plush texture," and "immense drinking pleasure."

• Berliner Wein Trophy: Vintages from this collection have historically secured Gold Medals, recognized for their superb typicity and crowd-pleasing style.

• Mundus Vini: Often highlights the Massaro cuvée for its excellent value, balance of sweet Mediterranean fruit, and soft tannic structure.

Maturity Status

This vertical lot spans across multiple evolutionary phases. The 2017 and 2018 bottles are in their "Mellow Tertiary Prime," pouring a deep ruby color with warm garnet rims. Their bouquets are highly expansive, offering notes of dried figs, prunes, baked blackberries, tobacco, cocoa, and sweet vanilla spice. On the palate, the tannins are entirely melted and velvety. In contrast, the 2022 bottle is in its "Vibrant Primary Youth," bursting with juicy dark cherries, plum jam, and Mediterranean scrub, supported by a lush, opulent body and soft structure. It is a highly entertaining lineup for a casual tasting dinner.

Market Price and Value

Giordano Vini operates on a direct-to-consumer model, making their well-stored back-vintages highly uncommon to find packaged together on the traditional secondary retail market.

In the current Swiss market (Zurich/Geneva), individual bottles of recent Massaro releases typically trade between 20 CHF and 30 CHF. A curated 4 bottles vertical lot of this nature holds an estimated value of 80 CHF to 100 CHF. It represents an accessible, high-reward tasting lot for enthusiasts who love full-bodied, low-acid Italian reds and want to explore the cellaring capability of Puglia.

• Handling: The 2017 and 2018 bottles do not require aggressive decanting but should be opened 30 minutes before serving to let the secondary aromas wake up. The younger 2022 will benefit from a brief 30-minute decant to open up its primary fruit. Serve all three bottles slightly cool at 16–18°C in large, round red wine glasses.

• Delivery: Local pickup in the Zurich area is preferred. shipping within Switzerland can be easily arranged at the buyer's risk.
