Ekoi, Cross River Region, Nigeria, mid-20th century
Exotic wood, leather, reddish-brown patina
Height: 45 cm, including mount
Provenance: From a noble European collection.
An imposing and finely sculpted Ram–Wolf mask, executed in exotic wood and entirely covered with leather, distinguished by a deep reddish-brown patina that enhances the richness and depth of its surface.
Characteristic of the Ekoi artistic tradition of the Cross River region of Nigeria, this striking mid-20th-century work displays an exceptional attention to detail. The powerful animal features are articulated through finely modelled forms, while the monumental, spiralling horns are rendered with meticulous handwork, creating a remarkable sense of movement and volume. The carefully worked leather covering follows the contours of the underlying wood with precision, revealing the skill and patience of its maker.
The combination of noble exotic wood, hand-applied leather, richly developed patina and refined craftsmanship gives the mask an exceptionally tactile and sculptural presence. Mounted on a custom pedestal, it is conceived not merely as a ceremonial object but as a powerful work of African sculpture, equally compelling from every angle.
