Episodes:
1 The Even Chance
Horatio Hornblower, a new Midshipman, joins the British Royal Navy. His immediate problems stem from his seasickness and a shipmate, Simpson, a bully who compensates his own failings by terrorizing his fellow midshipmen and the new recruit. The antagonism leads to a duel with tragic results.
2 The Examination for Lieutenan t
Hornblower is now a member of the crew under Captain Pellew on HMS Indefatigable off Toulon, and Britain is now at war with revolutionary France.
3 The Duchess and the Devil
Lieutenant Hornblower is sailing home a prize, carrying with him secret papers and an illustrious passenger; a duchess, when they are captured and taken prisoners by the Spanish fleet, now entered into war as a French ally. How can he escape with his top secret charge, the other prisoners, and above all, the duchess whose behaviour is becoming increasingly suspicious?
4 The Frogs and the Lobsters
When Hornblower is charged with taking a regiment of British Redcoat Marines (The Lobsters) and French nationalists (The Frogs) over the English Channel to assist in the fightbacks against the French revolution, he is overcome with the brutality and the haughtiness of the “liberators”, which ultimately lead to a disastrous result of this ill-fated mission.
5 Mutiny
Hornblower is the 4th junior Lieutenant aboard HMS Renown, en route to a secret location. Her captain, Sawyer, is a war hero, but he is also dangerously unstable and his erratic commands destabilize the discipline on board and endangers the whole mission. Hornblower and the officers become aware that action of some kind has to be taken, but they are only too aware of the consequences: attempt to take over command means mutiny, and stand by and watch means letting the discipline and the safety of the ship disintegrate...
6 Retribution
With captain Sawyer dead, Buckland takes control of the ship, but he is not up to the task. Hornblower suggests a plan of attack against the Spanish fort on Samana Bay despite their earlier failure to take it. All goes well and they take the whole island and catch valuable prizes to escort to Jamaica. But Hornblower has to come again to Buckland’s rescue before they reach Jamaica.
7 Loyalty
1803 Portsmouth. Hornblower is reduced to the rank of Lieutenant as a result of the peace treaty of Amiens with France. A chance encounter with Lieutenant Bush reignites their friendship and indeed, it is Bush who first notices that Hornblower has an admirer – his landlady’s daughter. Soon Hornblower is promoted to Commander of the Hotspur. His mission: to strike a pre-emptive blow against a French Fleet. But there is a traitor in his camp – and a very surprising traitor at that.
8 Duty
Hornblower’s wedding gives him only a brief spell from his duty – Admiral Pellew sends him off to search for the missing sloop Grasshopper, captained by their old friend Bracegirdle. And in the end Hornblower will learn that the future also holds personal duties for him at home ...
